Ensure you have one of the recommended USB or Firewire cards: iPod: Recommended Firewire and USB Cards
If you have a recommended card and still have problems your connection may have been compromised. If you have a removable USB card try the following:
1) Uninstall the drivers for the USB card.
2) Remove the card.
3) Place the card into a different slot, if one is not
available then remove it and place it back into the
same slot. (refer to note: below)
4) Reinstall USB drivers.
5) Check device manager and to ensure you’ve installed
the USB correctly.
a) Go to start>> settings >> control panel >>system >>
click hardware tab >> Device Manager.
b) Once there look for Universal Serial Bus
Controllers, Do you see a question mark? If so:
start over at step 1.
c) Otherwise click the plus sign.
d) Now right click on USB Root Hub.
e) Click properties it should say, “This device
is working properly”. If not, start over at step 1.
6) Now reconnect the pod to the PC.
Note: It has been suggested that moving a card from the front port to the back port may result in a better connection. In some cases front ports are USB 1.1, and the back is USB 2.0. The result will be increased transfer speed with a more reliable connection. Again this is dependent upon the type of card being used.
